Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of health service delivery and workforce development in the Pacific is the focus of a new Australian Government funded program to be implemented through a partnership with the Pacific Community (SPC), the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science, and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
The Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network (PPHSN) will celebrate its 20th anniversary this week (19-22 April) at a regional meeting in Suva, Fiji.
This event, which is organised by the Pacific Community (SPC) in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the Fiji National University, will be attended by public health officials and experts from across the Pacific.
Message from the Pacific Community Director-General, Dr Colin Tukuitonga
The Pacific Islands region has among the highest rates of diabetes and obesity in the world. We are the epicentre. The extent of these and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in our region is viewed as a human, social and economic crisis.
On 7 April, we join the world in marking World Health Day. This year, diabetes is the theme for the first time: ‘Beat Diabetes: Scale up prevention, strengthen care and enhance surveillance’.
